Air Handlers

An air handler is the indoor component of your HVAC system that circulates conditioned air throughout your home. It includes the blower fan and heating/cooling coil, and works with your outdoor unit to maintain comfort.

Unlike a furnace or an outdoor AC unit, the air handler’s primary job is to move air through your ducts and past the coils so that conditioned air can reach every room.

An air handler must be sized correctly for your home’s square footage and existing HVAC equipment. Improper sizing can lead to poor airflow, uneven temperatures, and higher energy bills.

Variable-speed air handlers adjust airflow in response to demand, offering quieter operation, improved humidity control, greater energy efficiency, and more consistent comfort than single-speed units.

With regular maintenance, most residential air handlers last around 10–15 years, depending on usage, climate, and care. Routine check-ups help maximize lifespan.

To maintain peak performance and indoor air quality, check and replace air handler filters every 1–3 months—more often if you have pets or allergies.

Because the air handler pushes air through your HVAC system’s filter on every cycle, it helps remove dust, allergens, and other pollutants—supporting cleaner indoor air when paired with quality filters.

Watch for weak airflow, unusual noises, high energy bills, or uneven room temperatures. These could signal airflow restrictions, blower issues, or a unit nearing the end of its lifespan.

Annual HVAC inspections—ideally in the spring and fall—help catch minor issues early, clean internal components, and keep your air handler efficient all year.

Modern air handlers deliver more precise airflow control, better dehumidification, and lower energy use than older units, potentially lowering utility costs.
